Life is not fair – get used to it! Bill Gates

July 31, 2009

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents ‘ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So, before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8:
Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

Using caluculors in Sri Lankan school exams.

July 4, 2009

calculatorI have serious question to ask, why our students are not given permission to use the calculators in the entire school education career. In the examination too, it is offensive to use a calculator or magnetic devise. According to my best of knowledge this kind of situation only prevailing in our country. Even in India and other less developed countries too adapted to British standards and they have given access to calculators. Since our education system is very much similar to British national curriculum from the good old days, why are we reluctant to adjust to new and easiest methods available in this technically advanced world?

I don’t know whether this practically viable in a developing country like Sri lanka where most of the people are below the poverty live. But there is an issue that education department and government are keen on developing the school infrastructures by providing million rupees worth of computer systems and other technical savvy equipments. Then why can’t the government at least manage to give a 100/= worth calculators to every secondary school students.

Using calculators is a part of our modern way of life. Today it is not a problem for kids to get a calculator and put it into practice. By the help of a calculator we can carry out complicated mathematical operations quickly and accurately. Calculator proponents claim that calculators simplify tasks and allow students to spend less time on monotonous calculations and more time on understanding problems and determining the best methods for solving them; calculators allow students who would normally be turned off to math because of dissatisfaction or boredom to increase their mathematical understanding. It facilitates desirable result without sweating, puffing and having a dread of mistakes and therefore will become more confident about their math abilities.
Some might argue that a person who all the time uses a calculator gradually loses his/her mental computational skills. But it should not be the excuse for this extreme backwardness of us with the rest of the word. At least we should implement to use calculators from the advanced level onward as soon as possible. I personally believe an average ordinary level or advanced level student spends one third of his total examinations time on solving sums in subjects like mathematics, accounting, statistics, chemistry, physics and other calculation related subjects. If we could reduce this spending time on calculation, we could enhance the standard/depth of subject and examination papers.

A student should not be punished in examinations for the only reason that he/she is slow in calculations. He/she might be well understood the subject content and could not bring the full potential or unable to obtain marks due to this insignificant reason. I am sure this will be implemented within next 5-8 years. But what is the significance of delaying such a long time. Please implement it as soon as possible to ensure no harm is done for anybody
